Senior Full-Stack Engineer (AWS) Full Time Jobs

Senior Full-Stack Engineer (AWS) – Remote (South Africa).

A well-established international software development company is looking for a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer (AWS & Event-Driven Systems) to join their team on a full-time, permanent basis.

This is a fully remote or hybrid opportunity, with the flexibility to work from home or visit the company’s offices once a week in either Cape Town, Pretoria, or Johannesburg.

Salary: R 90,000 CTC per month (negotiable).

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer with strong hands-on experience in designing, developing and implementing scalable, resilient and production-grade event-driven systems on AWS.

The successful candidate will have a strong backend and cloud architecture background, with demonstrated experience working with distributed, event-driven systems and the ability to design solutions that are reliable, scalable and maintainable.

While backend and AWS architecture will be the primary focus of the role, solid frontend development experience is also required, with Vue.js experience being highly advantageous.

The specific backend programming language is less important than the candidate’s demonstrated ability to understand and implement robust event-driven architectures and distributed system patterns.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop and maintain scalable, resilient and production-grade event-driven applications and services.
• Design and implement event-driven architectures using AWS cloud services.
• Develop reliable asynchronous processing and communication between distributed services.
• Implement appropriate mechanisms for handling duplicate events and ensuring idempotency.
• Design solutions around at-least-once and exactly-once processing semantics where appropriate.
• Work effectively with eventual consistency and distributed system behaviour.
• Design and implement retry mechanisms and dead-letter queues (DLQs) to ensure system resilience and recoverability.
• Consider and implement appropriate approaches to event ordering, out-of-order processing and message sequencing.
• Develop and maintain infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, particularly AWS CDK.
• Build and maintain serverless solutions using AWS Lambda.
• Design and implement event-driven workflows using Amazon EventBridge, SNS and SQS.
• Develop workflow orchestration using AWS Step Functions where required.
• Implement appropriate event filtering, routing and fan-out patterns.
• Apply established distributed-system patterns, including the Outbox Pattern, where appropriate.
• Design, develop and optimise databases to support scalable application workloads.
• Develop appropriate automated testing strategies, including unit, integration and end-to-end testing.
• Collaborate with other developers, technical stakeholders and relevant teams to design and deliver high-quality software solutions.
• Contribute to technical design decisions, architecture discussions and continuous improvement of development practices.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve complex production and technical issues.
• Ensure solutions are maintainable, secure, scalable and aligned with software engineering best practices.

Key Technical Requirements:

• Event-Driven Architecture:
  • Strong hands-on experience designing and implementing event-driven systems, with a deep understanding of:
  • Idempotency and safe handling of duplicate events
  • At-least-once and exactly-once processing semantics
  • Eventual consistency
  • Dead-letter queues (DLQs)
  • Retry and failure-handling mechanisms
  • Event ordering and out-of-order processing
  • Event filtering and routing
  • Pub/sub and fan-out architectures
  • Asynchronous processing
  • Distributed system reliability and resilience
  • Outbox and related event-driven design patterns
• AWS / Cloud Technologies:
  • Practical experience with several of the following AWS technologies is highly desirable:
  • AWS CDK – Infrastructure as Code
  • AWS Lambda – Serverless computing
  • Amazon EventBridge – Event buses, rules and schema registry
  • Amazon SNS – Pub/sub and fan-out messaging
  • Amazon SQS – Queuing, FIFO queues and durable asynchronous processing
  • AWS Step Functions – Workflow orchestration and state management
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate how these technologies have been used in real-world, production environments, rather than only having theoretical knowledge of the services.
• Backend Development:
  • Strong software engineering and backend development experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design scalable and maintainable backend services.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and asynchronous processing.
  • Experience developing production-grade cloud-based applications.
  • Strong understanding of API design, integration and service-to-service communication.
  • The specific programming language is less important than demonstrated architectural and engineering capability.
• Frontend Development:
  • Several years of solid, relevant web frontend development experience.
  • Vue.js experience is highly preferred, although experience with another modern frontend framework may also be considered.
  • Ability to develop maintainable, responsive and user-friendly web applications.
  • Understanding of frontend architecture and integration with backend services and APIs.
• Database Design & Optimisation:
  • The successful candidate should have a sound understanding of database design and performance, including:
  • Designing appropriate database structures and schemas.
  • Database performance and optimisation.
  • Understanding of indexing and query optimisation.
  • Identifying and resolving database performance bottlenecks.
  • Selecting appropriate data-storage approaches based on application requirements.
  • Understanding the impact of database design on scalable and distributed applications.
• Testing & Quality:
  • A strong understanding of software testing methodologies is required, including knowing when and why different testing approaches should be used.

Experience with:

•  Unit testing
• Integration testing
• End-to-end (E2E) testing
• Automated testing
• Testing distributed and event-driven systems
• Identifying appropriate testing strategies based on the functionality and architecture being developed
• The candidate should be able to explain the purpose and appropriate application of different testing methodologies rather than simply having experience executing tests.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field is advantageous; however, equivalent relevant professional experience will also be considered.
• Several years of professional software development experience.
• Demonstrated experience designing and developing cloud-based applications.
• Strong practical AWS experience, particularly within serverless and event-driven environments.
• Experience working with distributed systems and asynchronous architectures.
• Experience contributing to architectural and technical design decisions.
• Experience working within agile software development environments is advantageous.

Key Candidate Profile:

• The ideal candidate will be a senior software engineer with strong AWS and event-driven architecture experience, rather than simply a developer who has worked with individual AWS services.
• They should be able to demonstrate practical experience designing systems where considerations such as idempotency, duplicate events, eventual consistency, message ordering, retries, DLQs and distributed-system resilience are fundamental to the solution.
• Strong frontend experience, particularly Vue.js, is an important additional component of the role, but the core differentiator will be the candidate’s backend engineering and event-driven architecture expertise on AWS.

Interview Process:

The company has a straightforward and streamlined interview process consisting of only two stages.

• Technical Assessment
  • A brief technical assessment will be conducted to evaluate your technical skills, knowledge and overall abilities relevant to the role.
• Interview
  • Following the successful completion of the technical assessment, you will attend an interview to assess your suitability for the position, as well as your alignment with the company’s culture and working environment.

Should you successfully complete both stages, the company intends to proceed with an offer of employment.

Applying for position:

• Only open to South African citizens.
